These thick and fluffy Nutella pancakes would be perfect for Pancake Day, baked with Nutella in the batter they taste amazing and have a rich dark colour. Drizzled with melted chocolate, they make the perfect indulgent brunch!

Tower of Nutella pancakes with chocolate drizzled over and strawberries on the side.

If you love the flavour of Nutella then these pancakes are for you. I used spelt flour in the pancakes which adds flavour and goodness, but you can also switch for standard plain flour.

They are so quick to make and can be reheated if you want to make them in advance and enjoy them later for a special breakfast or brunch.

    Nutella spelt pancakes

We really enjoyed these Nutella pancakes. Definitely on our list for Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday if you prefer!

    Ingredients

    • flour – either spelt or plain
    • salt
    • baking powder
    • an egg
    • milk – I use semi-skimmed
    • Nutella
    • butter

    Step by step

    1. In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt and baking powder.
    2. Keep a little of the milk back, then in a jug, combine the egg and rest of the milk.
    3. Place the Nutella in a small bowl, and pour on the milk you saved.
    4. Microwave the Nutella and milk for about 30 seconds until the Nutella is soft and can be mixed into the milk.
    5. Spoon the warm Nutella mixture into the dry ingredients and combine.
    6. Pour in the egg and milk and mix well until smooth.
    7. Pour the pancake batter into a plastic bottle with a nozzle if you have one (if not just spoon the mix carefully into the hot pan when ready).
    8. Heat a frying pan and add a small amount of butter (or coconut oil).
    9. When the pan is hot, pour or spoon in the pancake mixture to make two or three small pancakes at a time.
    10. Reduce the heat once the mixture is in the pan. After a couple of minutes, the edges will be firm and you can turn the pancakes.
    11. Cook them on the other side for another minute or so.
    12. Remove the cooked pancakes to a plate and repeat until the pancake batter is used up.
    13. Serve warm, spread on more Nutella if you are a real addict, or drizzle on melted chocolate, raspberry/strawberry sauce, salted caramel sauce, whatever takes your fancy!

    Toppings

As for toppings your only limit is your imagination, here I have added Creme Eggs, melted chocolate and Nutella on top, with strawberries on the side, for an Easter twist.

For a fruitier twist you could top them with blueberries and raspberries and drizzle over blueberry sauce or syrup.

Go over the top with the toppings, for Easter you can even add Cadbury Creme Eggs on there too with the melted chocolate.

I keep meaning to try some more different flours, I remember going through a phase of them but then ended up back in generic camp! Love the idea of adding nutella – will have to sneak some out of my boyfriends prized jar!

Perfect for Nutella fans. I’ve made spelt pancakes before and it seems to work really well.
